11th annual pool party for pups was a record breaking success

Sunny skies and warm temperatures greeted the 70 dogs and their companions at Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter’s 11th Annual Prairie Pool Puppy Paddle which was held this past Saturday, August 25 at the Prairie du Chien Swimming Pool.
Small dogs had the first opportunity to get their feet wet beginning at 9 a.m. The “small dogs only” is very popular with the toy breeds and puppies. It gives these dogs a chance to get acclimated to the water without being overwhelmed by the larger breeds. At 10 a.m., Labradors and Golden Retrievers outnumbered the other breeds, showing off what they were bred to do – swim and retrieve. Dogs of all sizes, ranging from a Chihuahua mixed breed which was rescued from an overcrowded animal shelter near Houston, TX, and adopted by a local resident through Rivers & Bluffs to a St. Bernard, a Great Dane and a few Burmese Mountain Dogs all enjoyed the fun in the sun and the 0-depth pool.
Once inside the fenced enclosures, leashes were removed and the fun began. Most dogs all spent some
time in the water, but a few dogs never even ventured into the water, choosing to spend their time running at large in the grassy fenced area of the aquatic park grounds. Random games of dog tag and takeaway (the tennis ball) popped up often throughout the day. A number of dog owners were amazed to see the change in their dogs. Some dogs at first seemed a bit shy and overwhelmed by all of the activity and splashing. But after watching the other dogs, these timid canines decided to test the water and join the fun. It is difficult to say who had more fun – the dogs, their owners or the spectators who came just to watch. One thing is for sure – all of these dogs slept well that evening.
The 11th Annual Prairie Pool Puppy Paddle was sponsored by Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter, Prairie du Chien Park and Recreation, Thrivent Financial, and Walmart.
